While Rodriguez says the move is “full of excitement” and includes the launch of TUDN Extra – an OTT offering — some may be wondering why a brand change is in the works for a network touted over several seasons as the leader in its category.
It’s also an interesting move for Univision as it does not have rights for the FIFA World Cup. An Impremedia reporter attending Univision’s pre-Upfront press gathering in New York inquired about Univision’s future plans, and if it would be for the rights once Telemundo’s current tenure is up.
Rodriguez replied that the company “will always do investments that are smart and business savvy.” Thus, Univision will put its foot in the ring but will do so “in a responsible way,” as “we are in the business of making money for our owners.”
CEO Vince Sadusky couldn’t agree more. “Had I’d been here I would have fully supported the decision to spend the hundreds of millions of dollars spent in soccer rights into programming that week in and week out delivers audience,” he said.
