MEGA TV (SPANISH BROADCASTING SYSTEM)
Mega TV has become a profitable operation under SBS COO Alberto Rodriguez. Now, with the 2019-2020 Upfront season upon us, what can viewers and advertisers expect to see from a nationally distributed channel widely available in its home market of Miami-Fort Lauderdale?
Perhaps the biggest new news regarding Mega TV is the arrival of highly acclaimed journalist Ismael Cala. He’s joined SBS for a new 3pm issues- focused talk program taking the name Cara a Cala. It’s produced by Cala
Enterprises, and will air in both the mainland U.S. and on Mega TV in Puerto Rico.
Cala notes it is a global show, with international distribution, and that it is a “showcase for the everyday person with extraordinary lives.” Viewers can look forward to intimate interviews, and that excites Mega TV VP/Programming and Production José Pérez.
Cala is widely known for his tenure at CNN en Español.
MÁS NOTICIAS
In addition to Cala’s arrival in afternoon drive, Mega TV is fortifying its news division with Mega News – Edición de la Tarde. This newscast features Natalia Cruz and will run in the 5pm Eastern hour. Expanded segments will focus on sports, travel, technology, health and fashion, and music – with a particular connection to SBS’s LaMúsica.com app.
A TRIUMPHANT RETURN?
For a generation of Puerto Ricans, Antulio "Kobbo" Santarrosa is famous as the creator of La Comay, which in mid-January 2013 disappeared from WAPA-4 in San Juan, Puerto Rico after a successful run.
Six years later, La Comay returned – via Mega TV. It also got a stateside play.
In the first weeks of the show’s launch, some controversy surfaced. It seems the reason why La Comay was no longer on WAPA resurfaced as an issue anew: homophobic comments and “yellow journalism” claims.
Those against the show’s return claim advertising was “lacking” in response to these concerns.
Among the other shows that define Mega TV in 2019 and 2020 are Ahora con Oscar Haza and perhaps its best-known offering, the Jaime Bayly-helmed Bayly.
