2018 Hispanic TV Upfront Guide Presented by HispanicAd.com
INTERVIEW
JESSICA RODRIGUEZ
President/COO, UCI Network and CMO, Univision Communications
Despite all of the noise and boasts from its competitors, Univision — and its over-the-air UniMás network and cable TV stalwart Galavisión — still dominates Hispanic viewing in a world with more choices than ever. To get a closer look at what Univision is pitching during its 2018-2019 Upfronts, the Hispanic TV Upfront Guide conducted a Q&A with Jessica Rodriguez.
HTVU: What's the big push for the flagship Univision network as marketers and advertisers gear up for a two-day experiential event -- something new for Univision Communications?
JESSICA RODRIGUEZ: This season we are developing some
very powerful and diversified content based on insights that
continue to encourage co-viewing, spanning eight genres.
Across Realities, Music, Melodramas, Action Dramas, Crime
Dramas, Dramedies, Supernatural and Sword-and-Sandal, we are innovating and satisfying today’s viewer. We are also excited about franchises, including dramedy Mi Marido Tiene Familia, courtroom dramas Por Amor Sin Ley, and fast-paced crime series La Piloto. All are returning for additional seasons. The 2018-19 primetime lineup stems from a multi-source pipeline of content that also includes our own W Studios productions: La Piloto, Contracara, La Bella y Las Bestias and El Último Dragón.
HTVU: Is the telenovela waning in popularity? What can be said about this genre of programming compared to other prime-time opportunities that may exist?
JR: Telenovelas continue to be an important part of our offerings, and together with Televisa we are transforming, innovating and improving production values. We have evolved the traditional telenovela format while keeping the core essence of what viewers enjoy – shorter formats, and storylines that showcase life lessons learned and reflect real-life experiences about success or simply good prevailing over evil, where love wins.
HTVU: Reality competitions continue to be strong with viewers. Please fill us in on what's in store for Univision viewers.
JR: Hispanic viewers really enjoy watching reality shows, as it underscores important lessons about perseverance, overcoming obstacles and collectivism. That’s why Univision’s reality series, including Al Final Todo Queda en Familia, resonate with our audience.
