League coverage that’s set to arrive across Univision’s networks, including Univision Deportes Network, its sports-focused MVPD-distributed channel.
Then, there is “the game around the game,” as well as Univision’s coverage of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Univision also continues as the home of both the U.S. and Mexican national teams. Beyond soccer, Rodriguez expressed excitement about a recent arrival to the lineup:
Combate Américas, Univision’s live MMA programming.
SUPERNATURAL SERIES FROM TELEVISA
In a marked change from years past, Televisa, in partnership with UCI, revamped its development process to launch the first-ever global Spanish-language TV pilot season.
This was led, in part, through the efforts of newly named President of Televisa Studios Patricio Wills. He spoke at length in Spanish during the May 10 call with the U.S. press, noting that more than 100 submissions spanning the globe resulted from this joint effort between Univision and its Mexican programming partner.
Going into production are the supernatural-themed Brujas Al Amanecer. It’s a teen dramedy “that defies convention for Spanish-language TV,” Univision boasts, “with a timeless story about the struggle between embracing one’s differences or simply fitting in.”
There’s also Contracara, billed as “an intricate story of crossed fates unfolds as a media magnate is assassinated on his wedding day at the same time a hitman in the U.S. is executed in the electric chair. The soul of the magnate reincarnates in the body of the hired assassin and, in turn, the killer's soul winds up inhabiting a professor of anthropology. Each man will now have to deal with not just a new body, but how to adapt to a new spirit, as well.
A third supernatural-themed show, Apocalipsis, tells a story “about love, spirituality and redemption portrays one of the most controversial stories in the Holy Bible: the end of times.” The story will be told in three phases: the first in the 1980s, the second in the ‘90s and the last in present day. Throughout the plot, apocalyptic prophecies take place around the globe: Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Jerusalem and New York, where the fateful 9/11/2001 attacks are part of the narrative.
Action dramas are also a big part of what Univision will bring viewers. The top programming highlight in this genre is Las Benditas, described as “an action-driven drama about a group of widowed women who find their most empowered selves while battling back from tragedy.”
And, in the sign of the political times, a series with the title Bad Hombres is coming to Univision. The plot centers on two brothers who are separated in their youth and raised in different worlds. One follows his adoptive father’s footsteps to become the leader of
